Most newly built boats come equipped with LED lighting, but if your boat is older or you're considering purchasing a secondhand boat, the lighting may be in need of replacement. Learn more here at Outback Equipment as to which LED boat lights are best for your vessel. If you are looking for tips on how to install simple interior or exterior LED boat lights then check out our Youtube channel to see our Tinny build in action. What are the benefits of installing LED boat lights on a boat? The most frequent justification for considering switching to LED boat lights is that it's time to replace older lights that may be damaged or not functioning properly. One further reason can be a practical one: if your boat is older, you might have trouble obtaining replacements for specific halogen, incandescent, and even early LED fixture types.
Even if your older lights are in perfect working order, there are still reasons to upgrade. Modern LED boat lights have a far higher ratio of light production to energy usage than earlier ones, which is one of its main advantages. In comparison to many other types of fixtures, including early generation LEDs, LEDs produce less heat and offer a variety of light options, including neutral, warm, and cool white light. LED boat lights offer the advantage of being able to produce many colours from a single fixture, in addition to a wide range of colour temperatures and intensities of white light. This is due to the diodes' ability to emit coloured light. Colored lenses are required for halogen and incandescent lights to create multiple colours, and one bulb is incapable of changing hues. A fixture or bulb's LED circuit board can have as many different coloured diodes as the actual surface area of the board allows it.
So what's the difference? All electronics have become more efficient and smaller over time, consuming less power, lasting longer, and demanding less power. LEDs, like all electronics, have gotten more space and energy efficient over time, requiring less power, lasting longer, and giving forth more light. In general, newer LED boat lights generate greater light (measured in lumens) while using less electricity in a smaller, more energy efficient body. The marine industry now has more complex and cheap lighting options, such as "white tuning," thanks to LEDs. Warm, neutral, or chilly light can now be produced by a single lamp. For example, the Relaxn LED floodlight now offers a white and amber light option as well as full color-changing capabilities in a single downlight. Owners of boats can select the colour they desire at any moment by utilising a touch screen/switch panel which can be found here.
Types of LED boat lights:
Exterior Lights—These lights on the deck are the ones that need to be replaced the most. Courtesy lights are frequently turned down low and may be damaged by water or being kicked. In particular running conditions and harsh weather, the overheads may be sprayed by water and rusted.
Interior Lights—As the filament burns out or a piece of the light breaks, older lights in the cabin will perish. When operating behind the headliner, you risk snapping the light's spring or cracking the glass. If the manufacturer changed the style or size of their lights, the original bulb or fixture may not be available to replace.
Underwater LED Lights—Older LED and halogen lights may fail in part or entirely, or may simply not appeal as much as modern LEDs with more functions, such as additional colours or synchronisation with your music and above-deck lights.
Navigation Lights—LED running lights on the port, starboard, and stern are brighter, use less electricity, and last longer than older versions. LEDs are also a huge advantage for sailboats and any other boat type where weight is a big factor.
Switches and dimmers can also cause issues. Because halogen and incandescent lights dim in a different way than LEDs, dimming switches for older lights are almost always incompatible with LED boat lights. This may necessitate the replacement of several of the onboard switches but can be found available here.
Before shopping for LED boat lights ask yourself:
Are the lights on the surface or recessed?
What is the size of the cut-out and recess depth if it is recessed?
What is the outer diameter of the bezel?
What is the current lighting system's voltage?
Is a single-color or bi-color light required?
What method do I want to use to control the lights?
If you have any concerns about LED boat lights, switches, or installation, please contact us and we'd be happy to walk you through the range of LED boat lights we have available to suit.
