Choosing a stop and tail light

Start with the mount. A grommet-mount lamp sits in a rubber grommet in a cut-out and is the standard on trays and trailers, because the rubber soaks up vibration. A surface-mount lamp screws to a flat panel with no cut-out, which suits a canopy or rear bar. Round lamps include the Narva Model 43 at 150mm, the common tray size, and slimline rectangular lamps suit a rear bar or tailgate lip where there is no depth behind the panel.

Then check voltage and function. Lamps rated 9 to 33V run on 12V utes and 24V trucks without a converter, and most ranges offer a matching reverse lamp and indicator so the rear end looks like a set. Lamps that add the indicator and reverse in one housing are covered under LED combination lamps.

Fitting and compliance

  • Look for the ADR approval mark moulded into the lens. The Narva and LED Autolamps stop/tail lamps here carry one, which matters at a roadworthy.
  • Mount in pairs at the same height, as far apart as the body allows, so the outline reads at distance.
  • Earth is the usual fault. Run a dedicated earth wire back to the chassis rather than relying on the mounting screws through a painted tray.
  • LEDs may need a load resistor on older vehicles where a flasher unit or globe-failure module expects a filament globe. See load resistors.
  • Trailer wiring should be soldered or crimped with heat-shrink. Scotchlocks corrode within a season on a boat trailer.

What else you might need

Reverse lamps: the white lamp from the same series, so the pair matches.

Indicator lamps: amber lamps in the same housings.

LED marker lights: side and rear outline markers, required on anything over 2.1m wide.

Trailer cables and harnesses: pre-made looms for a full rear-light rewire.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 12V LED tail light work on a 24V truck?

Only if it is rated 9 to 33V or 12/24V. A 12V-only lamp fed 24V will fail. Most Narva and LED Autolamps ranges here are multivolt, and the sealed kits come in separate 12V and 24V versions.

Why do my LED tail lights flicker or stay dim?

Almost always a poor earth. LEDs draw so little current that a corroded earth through the tray shows up as a flicker. Run a separate earth wire to the chassis.

Do I need a load resistor for LED tail lights?

Not for the stop or tail function. You may need one on the indicator circuit if the flasher unit was designed for filament globes, or on some late-model vehicles that monitor globe failure.

What size tail light fits a ute tray?

The common tray size is the 150mm round grommet-mount lamp, such as the Narva Model 43. Measure the existing cut-out before ordering, as smaller rounds and rectangular lamps are also used.
