What are bump stops and why are they important?

Bump stops act as a cushion when your suspension compresses fully. They help protect your shock absorbers, coil springs or leaf springs, and mounting points from damage during hard impacts or bottoming out.

In lifted 4WDs, bump stops become even more important. With longer suspension travel, they help prevent your shock absorbers from closing all the way, which can cause seal damage or wear over time.

How do bump stops work?

Bump stops sit between your axle and chassis. When your suspension compresses, they absorb the impact and stop the suspension from hitting hard limits.

Some bump stops are rubber, while others use threaded cans or alloy spacers. Extensions help reposition the stop point to match lift height, keeping your suspension geometry safe.

Can you drive without bump stops?

It’s not a good idea. Driving without bump stops can cause your shocks to compress too far, which may lead to internal damage.

Without that cushion, you risk bending suspension components or wearing out your shock seals fast. Even on road, a missing bump stop can lead to rough handling and reduced comfort.
