Choosing a daytime running light kit

Start with the controller. A proper DRL kit includes a control module that switches the lamps on with the ignition and dims or switches them off when the headlights come on, which is what the Australian Design Rule for daytime running lamps requires. A pair of lamps wired to a switch is not a DRL, it is a pair of white lights with no rules behind them.

Then check space. Round kits come in 125mm and 164mm housings and suit a bullbar or bumper cut-out, while slimline bars mount along a bumper edge or grille. Older 4x4s and trucks with no factory DRL are the usual candidates. Lamps rated 9 to 33V run on 12V and 24V systems without a converter.

Fitting and function

  • Combination DRLs add a park light function, a fog light or an amber indicator in the same housing, which saves a second cut-out on a bullbar.
  • Mount them in pairs at the same height and spacing, between 250mm and 1500mm above the ground, as the ADR sets out.
  • Wire from the ignition circuit, not the headlight circuit, so the controller can do its dimming job.
  • Check the beam is white. Blue-tinted DRLs are not compliant.
  • Corrugations shake cheap kits apart. Use a rubber-isolated mount or a bracket with no flex.

What else you might need

Driving lights: for night, where a DRL does nothing. Several driving light ranges include a DRL ring.

Headlight replacements: LED headlamp inserts with a built-in DRL, if the whole lamp needs upgrading.

Wiring kits: relays, fuses and switches for the ignition-fed circuit.

Indicator lamps: if the DRL position takes over an existing indicator spot.

Frequently asked questions

Are aftermarket daytime running lights legal in Australia?

Yes, if they meet ADR 76: white light, on with the ignition, and dimmed or off when the headlights are on. A kit with a controller handles this. Mount them in a pair between 250mm and 1500mm above the ground.

Do I need a DRL controller?

Yes. The controller is what turns the lamps on with the ignition and dims them when the headlights or park lights come on. Without it the lamps stay at full output at night and draw attention from the wrong people.

Will a 12V DRL kit work on a 24V truck?

Only if it is rated for it. Lamps marked 9 to 33V or 12/24V run on both. A 12V-only kit will fail on 24V.

Can a DRL replace my park lights?

A DRL with a park function can, since it dims to a park light level when the headlights come on. A plain DRL cannot, so keep the park lights wired.
