What do hydrofoils do for small outboards? If you’re relatively new to the boating scene and you’ve found yourself on this page, it’s probably because you are looking for a way to ensure that the next time you head out on the water, it’s a much smoother ride. Outboard hydrofoils are used on smaller boats that don’t have trim tabs, as seen on boats that are above 16ft. Hydrofoils for outboards are a great way to get your boat up onto the plane faster.

What does it mean when your boat is up on the ‘plane’?

Get your boat up onto the plane is when the boat goes from stationary to full speed, this requires your motor trimmed into the transom and requires the max thrust to get the hull out of the water and up to top speed. Another term coined by the boating community is when the boat starts to ‘porpoise’ which is when the bow tends to lift and fall, not being able to maintain a comfortable plane. You will notice that as you start to ‘porpoise’, the boat will jump up and down and hit the water, making the general ride uncomfortable for the skipper and or passengers.

What are trim tabs? - Trim tabs are two plates at the back of your transom helping to get the boat up on the plane. Bigger boats have more of a tendency to lean, so manufacturers manufactured a way that you can lower your trim tabs on one side to level the boat out. Outboard hydrofoils mimic this design so you can achieve the same stability, torque and smoothness you’d typically experience in bigger boats. Hydrofoils for outboards are an easy solution to ‘porpoising’, which is where the hull of the boat alternately rises above the water line and re submerges. At top speed, this is a very uncomfortable experience, which is where an outboard hydrofoil really starts to make sense. Outboard hydrofoils are simple to install, you can easily do them yourself at home in under 20 minutes. Outboard hydrofoils also have the benefit of being more fuel efficient because they allow you to maintain your RPM in a lower rev range.
