Bigger boats have more of a tendency to lean, so manufacturers manufactured a way that you can lower your trim tabs on one side to level the boat out. Outboard hydrofoils mimic this design so you can achieve the same stability, torque and smoothness you’d typically experience in bigger boats. Hydrofoils for outboards are an easy solution to ‘porpoising’, which is where the hull of the boat alternately rises above the water line and re submerges. At top speed, this is a very uncomfortable experience, which is where an outboard hydrofoil really starts to make sense. Outboard hydrofoils also have the benefit of being more fuel efficient because they allow you to maintain your RPM in a lower rev range.
