How to Use a Shrimp Pot or Trap

Using a shrimp pot is simple. Place some bait inside a pouch or bait holder. Drop the pot in shallow water near mangroves, weed beds, or rocks. Make sure it sits flat on the bottom so shrimp can find their way in.

Leave it in the water for a few hours or overnight. When you're ready, pull it up slowly to stop shrimp from escaping. These traps are great because they do the work for you while you relax.

What to Put in a Shrimp Net

Shrimp love smelly bait. Fish scraps, prawn shells, or bread work well. Put the bait in a mesh bag to keep it from floating away. For extra luck, drizzle some fish oil on the bait.

Set your pot in calm waters with little current. This keeps the bait scent around and makes it easier for shrimp to find your trap.

Where to Place a Shrimp Pot

Finding the right spot makes all the difference. Look for calm, shallow waters like creeks, mangroves, or near rocks. Shrimp tend to gather in places with vegetation, as it gives them food and shelter.

Avoid areas with strong currents, as they can carry your bait away. Early mornings or late afternoons are the best times since shrimp are more active then. If fishing in a river or dam, try near the edges or where you see weeds floating on the surface.
