Cast Nets
Cast Nets for Bait Fishing
Cast nets are a great way to catch live bait without too much fuss. They're simple to use and work well in creeks, off the beach or around boat ramps.
There’s a wide mix of sizes and styles, so you can pick what suits you best. Some nets drop fast with heavy weights, others are lighter and easier to throw. You’ve got drawstring, top pocket, and standard pocket nets, plus options in mono or nylon.
What size cast net should I go for?
If you're new to cast netting or throwing from the bank, a 6 or 7 foot net is easier to manage and throw. Bigger nets from 8 to 12 foot cover more water and suit deeper spots, but they take a bit more effort and practice. Smaller nets are good for shallow creeks and baitfish like herring or poddy mullet. Larger nets work better for prawns or chasing bigger bait in tidal rivers.
What's the deal with drawstring and top pocket nets?
Drawstring nets pull tight at the bottom when you haul them in, which helps trap fast-moving bait. Top pocket nets are good for prawns that swim up, since the bait gets caught near the top as the net sinks.
Mono or nylon: which one should I use?
Mono nets are soft, light and easy to throw. They also dry quick and pack away neatly. Nylon nets feel a bit tougher and hold up well with regular use, especially around rocks or snags. Both work well.
What other fishing gear goes well with the cast net?
Once you've got your net sorted, it’s worth checking out a few extras that make the job easier. If you're handling nets with heavy leads or chain bottoms, a decent pair of gloves can save your hands from cuts or tangles. And if you're keeping live bait for later, an aerator is a simple way to keep prawns and baitfish alive and kicking till you need them.
