Find the Right Awning for Your Next Adventure

A quality caravan awning is the best way to double your living space at camp. It provides instant shade and protection from the rain, making the great outdoors feel like a second lounge room. Most modern rigs use a roll-out awning or a cassette style, which allows you to set up or pack down in just a few minutes.

The Aussie sun is brutal on fabric, so choosing a premium brand like Dometic, Carefree, or Aussie Traveller is a smart move for long-term durability. These awnings are designed to stay UV-resistant and waterproof through years of travel. You can find the perfect awning for your caravan in our extensive collection, including electric models for maximum convenience and manual wind-out versions for smaller campervans.

Buy your caravan awning online from Outback Equipment. We are an Australian owned and operated company that offers awnings and accessories for your caravan or RV. We ship all our gear from our Brisbane warehouse so you can get ready for your next adventure without the wait.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean a caravan awning?

Avoid using harsh chemicals that strip the UV-resistant coating off the fabric. Use a mild, pH-neutral awning cleaner and a soft brush to scrub away dirt and bird droppings. Always let the material dry completely before you roll it up to prevent mould and mildew from growing between the layers of vinyl.

Why is water pooling on my caravan awning?

Water pools because the awning is too flat or the fabric has lost its tension. To stop this, lower one of the legs to create a steep angle for rain runoff. You can also add a curved roof rafter or an awning tensioner to keep the material taut so water cannot sit and stretch the vinyl.

When is it too windy to leave my awning out?

If wind gusts are hitting 25-30km/h, you should pack the awning away immediately. Even with anti-flap kits and heavy-duty tie-downs, the large surface area of the fabric acts like a sail. A strong gust can easily flip the frame over the roof or rip the mounting bracket out of the RV wall.

What is the difference between vinyl and canvas awnings?

Vinyl is usually a PVC-coated material that is 100% waterproof and very easy to wash, though it can get quite hot underneath. Canvas is a traditional, heavier fabric that breathes much better in the heat but requires more maintenance to stay waterproof and UV-resistant over time.

Why won't my electric awning retract?

This is often caused by a flat battery, a blown fuse, or a failed motor. Most premium electric models have a manual override point hidden under a plastic cap on the motor head. This allows you to wind the awning back in by hand using a socket or drill so you aren't stuck at camp.

Do I really need an anti-flap kit?

You need one if you want to protect your investment and sleep through a breezy night. These kits attach to the edges of the vinyl to stop it from "cracking" and whipping in the wind. They also provide a built-in track that makes it much easier to slide in annexes or privacy screens.
