A 3-way (absorption) fridge runs on gas, 12V or 240V and has no moving parts, so it is silent and can cool off-grid on gas alone. A compressor fridge runs on 12V or 24V power, cools faster, copes better in high heat and draws less over a full day, but it needs battery or mains power to keep running.
Draw depends on ambient temperature and fridge size. As a guide, the Thetford DE105 uses about 0.2kWh over 24 hours at 16°C and around 0.7kWh at 32°C. In hotter conditions a compressor works harder, so size your battery and solar to cover the warmest days you plan to travel in.
For a couple on short trips, 80 to 110L is usually enough. Families or longer off-grid stints suit 120 to 180L, and full-time tourers often want 200L or more with a large separate freezer. Check the enclosure cut-out size in your van first, as upright fridges vary in width and depth.
