Air flow is the spec that decides how long you stand at the wheel. A 35 L/min unit suits car tyres and the occasional airing up, while 160 to 180 L/min covers most 4WD touring setups. Larger 33 inch and 35 inch tyres are where the high output units pay for themselves.
Duty cycle is how long the compressor can run before it needs to cool down. A rating of 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off means you may need a break partway through a set of four tyres, while a 100% duty cycle unit can keep running. Check the rating against how many tyres you air up in one go.
Portable units run off battery clips and move between vehicles, which suits most tourers. Hard mounted units wire into the vehicle with a loom and switch, stay out of the way, and can run air lockers and air tools. Some units, like the Tuff Terrain V4, ship with mounting legs so you can go either way later.
