Trailer Plugs & Sockets
When towing a camper trailer, caravan or boat it’s important to remember that hooking up the lights are not only a legal requirement, as the trailer will block the brake lights and indicators of the tow vehicle. A Narva trailer plug or a flat pin plug from Thunder ensures the connections between your towing vehicle and your trailer are completely secured. Invest in a high quality 12 pin caravan plug from Narva or Thunder, which doubles as a dual battery system.
7 pin trailer plugs and sockets
Most vehicles will come with a stock 7 pin flat or round pin near the tow bar section. The stock socket on a camper trailer will be the same, if you have not specifically requested the manufacturer to install a 12 pin flat trailer plug. Most caravans have a 12 pin socket, so if you have a 7 pin socket in your towing vehicle you will need to change it over to a 12 pin trailer plug prior to towing. If you refer to the diagram below you will see that the basic electricals for attaching a trailer to a towing vehicle with a 7 pin round plug.

If your caravan is fitted with a brake away system, a secondary battery or you want to run a fridge. For anything more complicated than basic towing of a camper trailer, you will need to install a 12 pin plug and socket on both your towing vehicle and the camper. The 12 pin socket not only allows you to wire up additional accessories, but it also allows for more versatility when towing. It is highly recommended that you seek out an auto electrician to do an install of a 12 pin trailer plug, but if you are unsure about which product to purchase, feel free to give us a call and discuss your 12v system with us.
Things you should know
If you are going to use your 12 pin trailer plug to power batteries or accessories in your caravan/trailer do your research on how much voltage it can handle as the wiring is only 6-8mm, which is traditionally too small to charge a battery and multiple appliances. In most cases, you will be able to operate a break away system and 12v fridge when the towing vehicle is running. Outside of this we highly recommend the use of an anderson plug and have it proffesionally wired by a licenced auto electrician, not uncle Jim whose ‘been doing this for years’.
Hot Tips For 12v Battery Systems & Anderson Plugs
In any dual battery system, you will also need to install a VSR (voltage sensitive relay) so that your alternator knows when to charge the secondary once your starter battery/ies) are fully charged. If you are running a secondary battery in your towing vehicle, and there is also a third battery in your camper trailer, you would need two VSR’s, one to tell the alternator that the starter batteries are full and to switch to charging the secondary battery. The second VSR is placed between the third trailer battery and the wiring just before the 12 pin trailer plug on your caravan/trailer. When the secondary battery is full the alternator will switch to charging the camper trailer battery. You can connect this up via the 12 pin trailer plug but once again be sure that the battery you have in the camper trailer doesn’t overload the wiring, which is why it’s important to seek a proffessionals opinion. If you have a newer car with a smart alternator (the engine switches off when stopped) you will need a BC to DC smart charger to tell the alternator to charge the secondary batteries.
