2020 was…less than ideal, to put it lightly. Which means that 2021 really needs to make it up to us – and by the looks of the new 4WD 2021 line-up, it’s set to impress! These new 4x4s will help you get to some of the most beautiful parts of the country and back again in one piece – with the added benefit of looking as good as they perform.

Whether you’re a Range Rover fan, a Jeep enthusiast or prefer to tackle terrain in a Land Cruiser, here are the best 4WD models to look forward to in the coming year.

Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series

Promising to be better that the 200 series in every way, the new LandCruiser 300 Series launching in 2021 carries on the LandCruiser legacy by pledging more torque, power, towing capacity and off-road capability in the newer model. The LandCruiser 2021 release also switches to a 3.3-litre diesel V6 engine in place of a V8, which some buyers may be sceptical about, but the turbocharged V6 will have the power to meet or exceed the 200kW and 650Nm on offer from the existing V8 diesel. A hybrid engine is expected to follow soon after, meaning you can get around town on electricity and save your fuel for your 4WD adventures.

The new overhauled LandCruiser certainly has a legendary status to live up to, making it one of the most anticipated new 4WDs for 2021.

Subaru Outback

With its genuine off-road capabilities and affordable price tag considering all that it’s offered throughout the years, the Subaru Outback has long been a favourite of many Aussies, making the Subaru Outback 2021 release something to look forward to. Originally announced way back in April 2019, the latest Subaru Outback is likely to hit Australian shores in March 2021. We don’t have the fine details of the newer model just yet, however looking at the available US Outbacks, we’re potentially looking at significant performance updates, a revised suspension layout as well as Subaru’s EyeSight safety features. This means adaptive cruise, auto emergency braking and lane-keeping functionality.

Jeep Wrangler

Unlike the Subaru Outback 2021 release, we have plenty of information regarding the upcoming Jeep Wrangler family. Rolling into action in January 2021, the newer Jeeps come with a cheaper entry point than previous Wranglers, with the new Sport S coming in at $51,950 before on-road costs. Unfortunately, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (the only diesel-powered 4x4 in the Wrangler flagship) is having its last hurrah, with all 2021 Wranglers now powered by a 3.6-litre Pentastar petrol V6 with a 298kW/347Nm output and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Thankfully, the new Wranglers score something new where something else has been lost, this being Jeep’s Tyre Fill Alert technology, which makes it easier to let air out of the tyres for sand driving.

Mazda BT-50

We’re sneaking in the 2021 Mazda BT-50 even though technically it was released on October 1st 2020, especially since it’s a pretty popular 4x4 amongst our readers here. Taking inspiration from the Isuzu D-Max, this 4x4 certainly holds its own both on and off-road, but you might want to upgrade the tyres to something a little more rugged if you plan to do some serious off-road driving. It’s easy to control on rough terrain too, thanks to its light steering, ample grunt and smart gearing setup to ensure a straightforward off-road drive.

Range Rover

The Range Rover might not strike you as a rugged off-road vehicle at first, but when you consider that its parent is the Land Rover, you quickly understand that the 2021 Range Rover can keep up with the big boys. V6 and V8 engines are carrying over into 2021, and there’s also a hybrid version on the horizon with a total system output of 297kW/640Nm, made possible due to the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor. A Range Rover will, however, set you back a huge wad of cash, so it’s unlikely to win any of the best 4WD awards.
