Choosing the right lock doesn’t have to be a difficult task. Locking your valuables up with a padlock and chain doesn’t cut it in some cases, as there are thousands of boat, trailer and caravan thefts every year that leave travellers devastated. It’s a sad reality, but there are people out there who would gladly steal a beloved bicycle for some quick cash and it happens all too often. Some of the more standard security devices used by caravanners are wheel clamps, hitch locks, coupling locks or security chains, but what is the best lock for you? In this blog we will outline the ideal anti-theft scenarios to help you make the right choice.

Hitch locks

Hitch locks are often overlooked. You might not even realise that the tow ball of your vehicle is an easy access point to remove a trailer that is attached. Tow balls, rated recovery hitches and trailers can easily be removed from the back of your vehicle simply by unhitching and removing the steel pin that holds it place. Kovix have developed a lockable hitch pin that cannot be removed, tampered with, cut or damaged and is highly recommended when towing an expensive camper trailer or boat. If you plan to leave your vehicle overnight, then the lockable hitch pin from Kovix is the way to go.

Alarmed locks

Kovix are famous for their alarmed locks including alarmed padlocks and alarmed security cables. An alarmed padlock coupled with a Kovix 1.8m security cable or 2.5m security cable is more than enough to deter thieves from anything you want to keep safe, including spare wheels, fridges and bicycles mounted to your caravan. An alarmed security able is the most secure way to make sure if you're parking your bicycle in an area you can’t keep an eye on it. Kovix’s security cables are cut resistant, made of high strength stainless steel. Trust us, if you go for the alarmed system, no one will even bother trying.

Motorbike and Bicycle locks

Kovix have developed an amazingly uncomplicated way of securing motorbikes and large bicycles with rotors with the help of a disc lock. This lock fits nicely into the holes of the rotor. You can choose from the 5.5mm disc lock or the 6mm depending on the thickness of your disc plates. If you want to make sure you don’t forget that it is on there (as driving away with a disc lock will cause damage to the forks), coupling it with a security cable around the handlebars and through your bike helmet will keep everything safe and secure.

Coupling Locks

Coupling locks come in all shapes and sizes. Kovix have developed quite a range depending on the coupling you have. If you have a D035 or D045 coupling then the KTR trailer lock is a justifiable expensive to ensure that no one steals your trailer and if they do try a 120-decibel alarm will certainly be the deterrent you want. There are also standard coupling locks that are designed to prevent thieves from using their tow ball to steal an unhitched trailer and driving off with it. A coupling lock is a great investment as you can simply adjust it when you are hitched up and you can feel confident if you must leave your vehicle and trailer for some time. An alarmed coupling lock will do the same thing but louder. The ideal lock combination would be a coupling lock and a lockable hitch pin so nothing can be removed or tampered with, meaning you can leave your vehicle and trailer parked up for days and it will still be there when you get back.

Outboard Motor Locks

The outboard motor locks from Kovix are designed to go over the thumb tails of the outboard motor that secures your motor to the transom of the boat. Quite simply if you cannot access these thumb tails then the motor is not going anywhere. The larger of the two outboard motor locks is designed for motors above 30 horse power and the smaller is designed for 30 horse power and below. The Minn Kota lock is highly recommended for this expensive bit of equipment, as it simply locks onto the mounting system, securing it to your boat.

All the Kovix locks are made from high grade stainless steel that cannot be cut or broken. They come with a lithium battery that will last about a year before needing a replacement. For Kovix locks that are rechargeable, be sure to charge them up every 3 months Be sure to also spray WD40 regularly into each lock to keep it free from dust and grime. This will ensure unlocking your lock is easy and won’t become damaged over time. It is also particularly important to write down the serial number of the keys in a place you won’t forget, as this will make replacing your set of keys if lost a much easier process. You might be wondering, can anyone with a Kovix lock undo someone else's lock with their keys? No. Every key is double cut, so the chances are 1 in a million.
